An Algebra for the BiTemporal Nested Data Model

چکیده

A generalized bitemporal relational data model (BTNM) is formalized for the representation of bitemporal data with nested structure of arbitrary depth. Time is represented by temporal elements. Time-varying attributes are timestamped by taking advantage of the nested feature of the model. Thus, the temporal dimension of the model is expressed by bitemporal nested attributes consisting of atomic time-varying attributes, a valid temporal attribute and a transaction temporal attribute. The advantages of tuple timestamping and attribute timestamping approaches are combined and their limitations are minimized since the temporal dimension is nested and not integral with the corresponding time-varying attribute. A novel recursive algebra for the proposed model is presented. All the operations are

BtSQL: nested bitemporal relational database query language

A nested bitemporal relational data model and its query language are implemented. The bitemporal atom (BTA) is the fundamental construct to represent temporal data and it contains 5 components: a value, the lower and upper bounds of valid time, and the lower and upper bounds of the recoding time. We consider 2 types of data structures for storing BTAs: 1) string representation and 2) abstract d...

An attribute or tuple timestamping in bitemporal relational databases

Much of the research on bitemporal databases has focused on the modeling of time-related data with either attribute or tuple timestamping. While the attribute-timestamping approach attaches bitemporal data to attributes, the tuple-timestamping approach splits the object’s history into several tuples. Although there have been numerous studies on bitemporal data models, there is no work contrasti...

Unification of Temporal Data Models

To add time support to the relational model, both first normal form (INF) and non-INF approaches have been proposed. Each has associated dii]iculties. Remaining within INF when time support is added may introduce data redundancy. The non-lNF models may not be capable of directly using existing relational storage structures or query evaluation strategies. This paper describes a new, conceptual t...

Unifying Temporal Data Models via a Conceptual Model

An Algebra for TSQL2

TSQL2 is a declarative query language, and as such, requires a procedural (algebraic) equivalent for implementation. In this chapter, we describe such an algebraic language. We undertook this design in order to show that TSQL2 can be implemented efficiently, with minimal extension of existing techniques. As TSQL2 provides a consistent extension of SQL-92, we had a parallel goal in the construct...
